Flat Stanley travels to Salem, IL

Hello! My name is Michelle and Flat Stanley and I traveled to Salem, IL to the Bryan Memorial Park. We left from my house, in Ina, IL and traveled by car 70.2 miles, round trip. Flat Stanley and I were very cold that day, so we snapped a few pictures and jumped back in my car!
Who is William Jennings Bryan and what is his significance to Salem? The plaque states that William Jennings Bryan lived in Salem from his birth in 1860, until 1875. He unsuccessfully ran under the Democratic ticket for President in 1896, 1900, and 1908. He served as the Secretary of State from 1913-1915 and died in 1925.
